COURSE OUTCOMES
CO 1: Understanding the gradual paradigm shift from language studies to across the curriculum important landmarks in connection with language and education in the historical and contemporary period
CO 2: Describing the basic understanding and familiarity with key concepts - language, language perspective, language bias, language stereotype, empowerment, language parity, equity and equality, patriarchy and feminism
CO 3: Evaluating language issues in school, curriculum and textual materials across disciplines, pedagogical processes and its intersection with class, caste, culture, religion and region
CO 4: Applying how language, across the curriculum relate to education (in terms of access, curriculum and pedagogy)
COURSE CONTENT
UNIT I-Language Diversity and Classroom Interaction
· Meaning and concept of language diversity.
· Varied language contexts of the learners: dialect, regional varieties and standard language
· Multilingualism - Meaning and concept, Challenges and strategies
· Classroom Interaction, home language and school language
UNIT II-Language and Communication
a. Meaning and importance of communication.
b Language as a tool of Communication
(i) Features of Language
(ii) Structure of Language
(iii) Language and Power
c. Communication Skills: Sender, Message, Receiver Medium Analysis.
UNIT III- Developing Communication Competencies: Reading and Writing
· Reading school texts (Language, social science, science, mathematics): expository
· texts vs. narrative texts; transactional text vs. reflective texts.Reading strategies — scanning, skimming and reading for extracting information
· Forms of Writing: note taking, note making, summarizing; writing with purpose
· Analyzing students' reading and writing; developing reading and writing
competencies
Constructive Skills - Engaging, Exploring, Explaining, Elaborating and Evaluating.
UNIT V-Classroom Discourse
· Importance of oral language.
· Discussion as an approach for learning: mode (participatory, interactive, collaborative)
· Questions as a tool for learning.
· Role of teacher in classroom discourse.
Practicum/Field work: (Any two of the following)
· Write a paper on efforts of the Central and State governments for LAC.
· Prepare on any one topic from any one UNIT with the support of Teacher Educator and present
· in the classroom.
· Review one recent article on LAC.
· Prepare a report on recent trends in educational development of LAC in India.
· Conduct an opinion survey for LAC in Education.
